The other dog is Buddy, although they look like they're from the same litter, Buddy is 2-3 years older than BooBoo. Coincidentally, Buddy knew Ginga well before we had ever heard of him. Did that help Ginga transition in better? Because BooBoo looks like Buddy? I guess we'll never know.

Cyclist adventure

My online weather identification system was showing 10 degrees which I've come to think of as summer and so I went outside with the guys for some play / business time.

BooBoo and Ginga Bicycle

In the beginning they were so energetic that they were pulling me on the bicycle. After a little while they figured out that they had to watch where the bicycle was going and started heeling. Then the fun began as I pushed Ginga to his speed limits. I don't think that I pushed the Booboo, maybe later when I go out just with Booboo, I can figure out what his speed limits are :) Booboo was looking at me and I read his mind.
He said,
"Hey, why didn't you tell me before you could go that fast? Why were we walking everywhere before? We could have had so much fun in the park chasing birds and rabbits and running. Mainly running. You dumbass!"

OK, interesting story. I was walking the guys for about 30 minutes to a birthday party "down the road." (Actually it was Ginga's secret lover's (GSL) birthday party) and when we got close to the house the dogs got very excited. I looked back to see a white dog with black spots following us very nicely. Didn't see a collar or anything, but the dog did look well-groomed. S(he) followed us all the way to the party and I got the Boonga in to the house and left to find the stray. This doggie had disappeared by then unfortunately, so we scared GSL by claiming that his present ran away. Oh well, maybe the doggie just escaped temporarily to get some action with the Boonga.

BooBoo (Tiny -B) and Ginga (G-Biggie) face off at 8 mile.

G-Biggie: Yo, ruff ruff
Tiny-B: ruff bark at you
G-Biggie: I rule Brunswick, your bark is weak.
Tiny-B: When in the park, I fly like Clark.
G-Biggie: I could catch you, but I don't want to.
Tiny-B: you silly G, you can't fool me.
G-biggie: I will push you around with my 55 pounds.
Tiny-B: I will take you down, you short-limbed clown.
G-biggie: Hey, that's mean !
Tiny-B: sorry, cheesestick ?
G-biggie: Sweet ! Do you think Animal Planet will invite us on "Hip-Hop Dogs" ?
Tiny-B: I don't know, Snoop prefers Doberman and Rottweiler.

( I apologize for this lame attempt at rapping. I just wanted to write Tiny-B and G-biggie in the same sentence as cheesesticks and Animal Planet)

Boonga applauds Faith, the courageous dog

The story of Faith, the two-legged dog is well documented all over the internet. Boonga applauds and is in awe of the spirit of Faith, so playfull and happy to trot around. Humbled by her attitude, Boonga promised to not pull on the leash anymore and leave the trash alone

BooBoo: Hey, Ginga, are these people supposed to be on the bed?
Ginga : I'm not sure, don't know what they're doing there.
BooBoo: Hmmm... well try and take up as much space as you can and maybe they'll leave
Ginga : I think they live here mate
BooBoo: Give them a cheesestick, maybe they'll leave. A resting dog needs his space
Ginga : I'm too lazy I'm already sleeping. How come you have so much energy?
BooBoo: Doesn't take much when I can order you around.
Ginga : You dumbass
BooBoo: It's OK, I'll make a new plan to get them out
Ginga : Whatever you're doing, it's working, they leave every morning.

BooBoo seizure and Ginga ulcer

I didn't blog about this before, because we didn't want to worry BooBoo's mum while she was in Taiwan, but here are my notes from BooBoo's epileptic seizures.

The first one that we witnessed was on 4 January 2006. Before all of you guys get worried, it wasn't a bad seizure, relatively. BooBoo was conscious the whole time, and it looked like he just had a nervous tic spread throughout his body. The limbs were affected, and so was his head. Here are my notes directly after the events :

did not lose consciousness, lasted about 10 minutes, right after ginga got his antibiotic - cephalex. ginga lost some on the floor and booboo was lying right there when it happened. Booboo had also had the hip/joint medication about 5 minutes before. also, he played with ginga 10-15 minutes before
Since this was the first time that we had seen something like this, we immediately put him into the car and drove him to the emergency clinic (this happened at approximately 2200 hours, so his normal vet was closed). He was by the time he got to the emergency clinic, and they advised us that it was common in dogs and to shut off tv and lights and record the event as well as we could so that we could potentially find some common triggers. Later, doing research, we found that some border collies are genetically predisposed to seizures and it may be much worse, with the dog actually losing consciousness. There are medications that control the seizures, but that's a lifetime thing once you start because if you stop after that you can actually induce seizures.

My notes from today:

Booboo had another seizure. He was under the couch, Ginga was on top of the couch. There was a loud noise like Booboo hit something and Ginga jumped off the couch. Booboo then crawled close to the edge of the couch and I noticed that he was having a seizure, time 2046. His feet were trembling but his head looked fine at that time. I set up the camera to record a movie of it but since he was under the couch it was difficult to see. Anyway, the seizure moved up to his neck and head and lasted for approximately 5 minutes. During this time the camera battery ran out and I didn't notice. I waited about 2 minutes after it subsided and lifted up the couch so that BooBoo would get out. He did, and walked towards the door. He then lay down by the door and I checked his limbs. His limbs were still trembling, his lower jaw was still trembling. It gradually subsided. Strange event - this morning Ginga was smelling BooBoo all over, from his mouth to his paws to his head and body. I got a little worried because I know that dogs can detect when an epileptic seizure is about to occur in humans, maybe they can detect this in dogs as well. I wonder if we can train him to warn us closer to the event.
This time I was not as worried as last time and knew what to do. I let him have his space and it was all fine. We have a video record now of the seizure so we can compare it to any future ones.

I don't think BooBoo needs medication. He is not in any pain due to the seizure and is still conscious. It's just something we have to live with and make sure that he doesn't bang his head on anything while this is going on. We could call him "Seizure Milan", ok doc, that wasn't funny, we agree.

Earlier in the day, Ginga was also sick. He vomited some blood and did not want to eat bread or anything else. He just dropped the bread! Now if you know Ginga, this is amazing as the guy lives to eat. So we called the vet and they asked us to bring him over. It's not a problem if he pukes a little, but if he doesn't eat afterwards it might be something blocking the route of the food. Lova and I-mei collected some of the vomit and we took it with us so they could analyse it. According to them it could be something he ate, something blocking his alimentary canal, or an ulcer. We took an x-ray that showed that there is no obvious blockage, but he did have a lot of "Number 2". The doc said he needed to get rid of that and gave us some pills to deacidify the stomach a little to help the ulcer heal. Ginga disagreed with the doctor and did not want to "release his load," as it were until later in the evening. I was very worried that it would be cancer but so far we don't think it's anything like that. It's funny, it's something that we wouldn't go to the doctor for ourselves, but when it's a helpless little thing we feel much more responsible.

The moral of the story is that when it rains it pours, and Ginga might be able to detect epilepsy in BooBoo. And dog owners, if your dog shows signs of seizure for more than 20 minutes you must take the dog to the vet. Otherwise, just record the events and take him (or her) later. Don't panic, it's a common thing. Shut off the tv/radio/mp3 player/lights and just chill. If it does last more than 20 minutes, try and get some ice cubes to keep the dog cool as seizures can cause them to overheat suddenly. If it is a bad seizure (when the dog loses consciousness) then do not get anywhere near the paws or the mouth. The do not know what they are doing and can hurt you seriously. Try to keep some cushions around so that the dog does not hurt himself or herself. That's all for the moment, we will update when we know more.

Mobile walk

yet another test from the mobile phone. There was some speculation that ginga might have some kind of hound, especially after we saw marlo who i think looks like ginga, with the coat and short legs and all. Here he was using his short legs to go underneath a bush to smell something out. Doggies were very excited, but we couldn't tell what it was all about.

Sophie and Stretch showed up a little later, after the earlier party. This time Stretch and Ginga were running and playing a lot. They were really muddy so we had to give Ginga a shower with the help of a sausage. So now Ginga has a girlfriend as well as BooBoo! Make sure you guys give the girls roses for Valentine's Day, and take them somewhere other than just the park.

Ginga chases Stretch. Finally I found a Ginga picture where he looks athletic. Booboo, you have competition from your brother.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not switch positions with each other so there are still two of you in the way.

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that esthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help, because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs and cats sleeping; they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing but sarcasm.

My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered.

In addition, I have been using bathrooms for years, canine attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, THEN go smell the other dog's butt. I cannot stress this enough. It would be such a simple change for you.

To pacify you I have posted the following message on our front door:

Rules for Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and Like to Complain About Our Pets:
1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.
3. I like my pet a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.
5. Dogs and cats are better than kids. They eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about buying the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and if they get pregnant, you can sell the results.

[Thanks to Don, in the mountains of Virginia!]

Boo/Ginga vs Cairo/Koza

Pretty cute couple Cairo the italian mastiff and Koza the lion cub. Especially considering that Koza just lost his twin brother. It seems that they are channeling the Boonga's dynamics. I am biased but I think the Boongas still win by a small edge.... until the cub grows of course. If you come across any other odd couple, please submit and we can start a Boonga contest !

BooBoo update 2

BooBoo is doing great today, he can walk on his leg. I wonder if dogs have a funny bone and he hit that hard yesterday? He's still limping a little, and it may also be the pain reliever that we gave him is making him use his foot more, but right now he looks good.

BooBoo's paw update

When we went home in the evening BooBoo's paw seemed worse. Outside he was only walking on it some of the time. Well, until he got distracted by smelling some rabbit. Inside it was the same, so we took him to the doctor's. He got a thorough examination there, and the doctor thought it was a sprain, so we have to keep the guys from playing with each other and let him rest it for a bit. He'll be fine. The doctor said that because it was Booboo it was easy to check his limbs to see if anything was dislocated, it would have been much harder with a "well-built" dog like Ginga. Ginga, if you are reading, this does not mean that you are a fatass. It is all muscle!

Well hopefully the little Booboo gets well soon, right now he looks like he wants a permanent handshake :(

Love of Trash

BooBoo and Ginga continued their love of the trash by getting into it today. I came home a little early to pick up my car and wanted to walk them. However, the sight that greeted me when I walked in put me out of the good frame of mind. I walked in and found soup cans, styrofoam boxes, empty cheesestick wrappers et al. randomly dispersed throughout the living and dining room. Following the trail visually led me to the upturned garbage bin, the source of the mess. By this time BooBoo was nowhere to be seen, which for him means under the sofa, and Ginga was trying to make himself small (yeah right) and hide under the living room desktop.

I have to say that the doggies had evolved two strategies to prevent my discovering their mischief. They were both jumping up and down, and BooBoo was barking. BooBoo normally barks and then runs on top of the couch, from where I call him to come and get his favourite butt-massage. However, this time he wanted to stop me right at the door, which immediately made me suspicious of his motives and led me to the aforesaid investigation.

Well, after picking up the trash and ignoring the repeated attempts of Ginga to get a massage, I decided to leave and then the BooBoo finally emerged from his hideout in the hopes of getting a walk. He seemed to not want to put his front paw down for some reason so I checked it out. No visible signs of anything, maybe the garbage lid fell on him or he hurt himself in trying to disappear quickly. Poor BooBoo, hope he gets better by the evening.

The doggies walked for 1.5 hours in the morning and they were very well behaved during the rest of the day. Even walking on heel without being told to, and not running out of the car when told to stay. Yesterday their behaviour was appalling in the park, they wouldn't listen, were fighting to get off leash instead of behaving well. Today they decided to make up to us. Yay! Good doggies!

Alpha, Doors and Dogs

There's this theory that you should always go out of doors first, before your dogs, because wolves that are leaders of their packs do that. I don't think that's some kind of genetically built response, I think that's more a learned behaviour, send the strongest in first, so I don't think it applies to dogs. Also, dogs definitely know humans from other dogs, we can tell that because of the way they treat us versus other doggies. They definitely don't play as hard with us and don't sniff our bottoms to identify our individual scents! I just thought up another reason though that we should go through doors before the guys. Because the door is the access to the outside and rabbits and such, we should associate us with letting them go outside and not the door. So if I open the door and let them just run outside, they might eventually think that it's the door that's opening to let them outside, and not the person who opens the door. I think that's more the case with our guys at least :) So, I've started doing that for a while and they seem to love me more for it! I make them sit for a while and if they are good, then I go through the door and let them follow me. They still don't understand the Heel command, but they are getting used to the bread and the doggie treats that they get when they are close to me.
